The Match
The 1984 European Cup Final was a historic match that showcased resilience and drama. Held on May 30, 1984, at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, the final pitted Italy's AS Roma against England's Liverpool FC. It was a particularly significant occasion for Roma, as the match was played in their home city, giving them a perceived advantage.
The game ended 1-1 after regular and extra time. Liverpool's Phil Neal opened the scoring in the 13th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error. Roma equalized just before halftime through Roberto Pruzzo, whose looping header gave the home fans hope. Despite Roma's dominance in possession, Liverpool's defense held firm, forcing the match into a penalty shootout.
In the shootout, Liverpool's goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar employed his now-famous "wobbly legs" antics, which unsettled Roma's players. The decisive moment came when Francesco Graziani missed Roma's fourth penalty, and Alan Kennedy converted Liverpool's fifth, sealing a 4-2 victory.
The triumph marked Liverpool's fourth European Cup win and solidified their dominance in European football during the 1970s and 1980s. For Roma, it was a bitter disappointment, as their dream of lifting the trophy on home soil was dashed.
