The History

Argentina's campaign in the 1996 Copa América, held in Bolivia, was marked by high hopes but ultimately ended in disappointment. Managed by Daniel Passarella, Argentina entered the tournament with a strong squad and were considered one of the favourites to win the title. The team showcased their strength in the group stage, securing top spot in Group B with victories over the United States (3-0) and Chile (2-0), and a draw with Bolivia (0-0).

In the quarter-finals, Argentina faced Peru and emerged victorious with a 4-2 win, thanks to goals from Ariel Ortega, José Luis Calderón, and Hernán Crespo. This win set up a highly anticipated semi-final clash against the tournament hosts, Bolivia. Despite their strong performances in the earlier rounds, Argentina struggled against Bolivia, largely due to the challenging high-altitude conditions in La Paz. Argentina lost the match 2-1, with their lone goal coming from Gabriel Batistuta.

This defeat relegated Argentina to the third-place play-off, where they faced the United States again. In a closely contested match, Argentina emerged victorious with a 4-2 penalty shootout win after a 1-1 draw in regular time. Despite not winning the tournament, Argentina's performance in the 1996 Copa América was notable for its strong attacking play and resilience, although ultimately falling short of the title.
