The History

Argentina's performance at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France was marked by strong displays and high expectations. Managed by Daniel Passarella, the team featured a blend of experienced players like Gabriel Batistuta and Diego Simeone, and emerging talents like Juan Sebastián Verón and Ariel Ortega.

In the group stage, Argentina dominated, winning all three matches. They started with a 1-0 victory over Japan, followed by a 5-0 thrashing of Jamaica, in which Batistuta scored a hat-trick. They completed the group stage with a 1-0 win against Croatia, ensuring they advanced to the knockout rounds with a perfect record.

In the Round of 16, Argentina faced England in a memorable and dramatic match. The game ended 2-2 after extra time, with goals from Batistuta and Zanetti for Argentina. The match is particularly famous for David Beckham's red card and Michael Owen's stunning solo goal for England. Argentina won 4-3 on penalties, with goalkeeper Carlos Roa making crucial saves.

The quarter-final against the Netherlands was another intense battle. Despite a goal from Claudio López, Argentina lost 2-1 to a late goal by Dennis Bergkamp, ending their World Cup campaign.
